Game Summary – Season Opener – March 5th

Earlier this month, the Rideau Valley Roller Girls started off their season with two incredible bouts against their hometown rivals, the Capital City Derby Dolls.

The first bout occurred between the Sirens and CCDD’s B Team the Dollinquents. Both teams experienced a pretty significant shakeup of their rosters after last season. The Sirens had lost a few of their veterans but picked up a number of quality transfer players in the off-season, while the Dollinquents saw many of their number move up to play for their A Team, the Dolly Rogers, and so were fielding a team with a couple of veterans and a number of rookies.

The Sirens jumped to a quick lead that they did not relinquished through all 60 minutes of game play. While the jammers were busy skating furiously around and around the track, the blockers made it easy for them with dynamic, 3-dimensional walls that held the Dollinquents’ jammers back and recycled them whenever they did manage to escape the pack. With quick feet, tons of communication, and incredible teamwork, the Sirens blockers kept the pack slow, making the Dollinquents jammers fight for every point they scored.

At the half, the Sirens lead 219-18, but the Dollinquents never gave up. They battled back in the second half and managed to more than triple their score, but they still had quite an uphill climb to match the Sirens’ early lead. In the end, the Sirens took the win 384-61. Despite the lopsided score, both teams fought hard (but very cleanly!) and left it all on the track.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Vixens went up against CCDD’s newly-minted WFTDA Charter team, the Dolly Rogers. Playing their first game as a WFTDA Charter team, the Dolly Rogers came out swinging and took a quick lead over the Vixens. For the first couple of jams, the teams traded lead back and forth. By halftime, the Vixens found their footing and started to pull away, ending the first half leading 50-40.

But as in the previous game, that was not the end of it, not even close. The Dolly Rogers kept fighting, and the Vixens fought back, resulting an incredibly exciting game of roller derby for fans of both teams. The score stayed low, with neither team able to rack up multi-pass jams against blocker walls delivering punishing hits. The Dolly Rogers played a remarkable game against the higher-ranked Vixens team, but, eventually the Vixens’ strength, skill, and experience prevailed. They took the win 144-100.

These were just the first two bouts of what is going to be an amazing season for RVRG – you won’t want to miss a thing!  Click here to find out about upcoming games!
